HYDROGEN PEROXIDE DISINFECTION

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), also known as dioxogen, dioxidane or oxygenated water, is a highly oxidizing compound, more so than chlorine, being a general antiseptic. It is a reactive substance, because its decomposition is highly exothermic, forming water and oxygen.

In enzymes and bacteria the effect consists in the oxidation of the sulfhydryl groups and the double bonds of the bacteria’s enzymes, causing a conformational modification of the proteins that form these enzymes, with the loss of their function, and therefore, cell death.

In spores, the peroxide transfers its oxidizing power to the disorganization of dipocolinic acid, the molecule that gives the resistance capacity so important to the vegetative forms of these spores.

Thus, we see that the disinfecting action of hydrogen peroxide is based on making the protective structures of these microscopic forms vulnerable. Altering the conformation of the cell walls or capsules allows access to the interior of these organisms, so that the peroxide continues its oxidizing power against other structures such as DNA, that other molecules alter the normal functioning of these cells so that, also, the mechanical action of the entry of water through the cell membrane causes the death of the bacteria.

This effect is intensified by silver ions that form a bond with the disulfide bridge of some proteins of microorganisms, thus inactivating or precipitating these proteins.

Its oxidizing character infers to the product the necessary capacity for the cleaning, hygiene and disinfection of surfaces with high organic and biofilm contamination of areas, utensils, elements or pieces of equipment used in food industries, clinical environment, etc.
